About WikiZetu

β€œKenya’s story, the Kenyan way.”

Vision

To build a people-powered, open, and trustworthy platform that documents Kenya’s journey β€” from the past to the present β€” in a uniquely Kenyan voice.

What is WikiZetu?

WikiZetu is a collaborative, open-content platform dedicated to preserving and sharing Kenya’s story. From historical events, civic knowledge, cultural heritage, and public policy to everyday acts of resilience β€” WikiZetu is the place where Kenyans document their truths, insights, and milestones for future generations.

Unlike other encyclopedias, WikiZetu centers Kenyan lived experience, language, and aspirations β€” written by the people, for the people.

Why It Matters

For years, stories of Kenya have been told from the top down, often filtered through political or foreign lenses. But the experiences, struggles, and triumphs of everyday Kenyans matter. WikiZetu was born out of the need to:

  • Preserve the untold stories of ordinary citizens.
  • Offer civic knowledge and historical context to younger generations.
  • Create a single reference point for Kenya’s social, cultural, and civic evolution.
  • Promote freedom of expression and media literacy in the digital age.

What You’ll Find Here

  • **Historical Timelines** – curated accounts of key events and eras in Kenya’s history.
  • **Civic Literacy** – simplified explanations of the Constitution, laws, and citizen rights.
  • **Cultural Memory** – indigenous knowledge, music, language, art, festivals.
  • **Remembrance** – honoring unsung heroes and documenting lives lost in the pursuit of justice or progress.
  • **Community Projects** – public interest infrastructure, innovations, and local changemakers.
  • **Corruption & Governance Logs** – factual timelines of projects, policies, and outcomes.
  • **The Kenya We Want** – shared aspirations, social contracts, and reforms proposed by Kenyans.

Our Principles

WikiZetu is grounded in:

  • Neutrality – all articles must be factual, well-referenced, and avoid partisan bias.
  • Openness – anyone can contribute, learn, or engage.
  • Inclusivity – stories from all counties, communities, and social classes are welcome.
  • Truth & Transparency – we cite credible sources and respect intellectual honesty.

How and Who Can Contribute?

You! Whether you’re a teacher, artist, student, farmer, software developer, activist, historian, or storyteller β€” your perspective is welcome here. All you need is the will to contribute and a commitment to verifiable, respectful knowledge sharing.

To contribute, create an account and add or open links to pages you want to contribute to, then add your content.

We have a review system, so it may take a few hours or days before your page becomes visible as reviewers check your submission.

Tipp

Paste your content from a Word document into ChatGPT and ask it to convert it to wikitext format. You can then paste it on the platform for intuitive formatting.

Join the Journey

WikiZetu is still growing. We’re inviting Kenyans at home and in the diaspora to help shape it. This is a community-built archive of who we are and where we are going.

Let’s write our story, the Kenyan way.
