Laban Mwangi Kagunda was a young Kenyan civilian from Ndumberi, Kiambu County, who was fatally shot during the Saba Saba Day protests on 7 July 2025.

Background

The Saba Saba Day protests in Kenya commemorated the pro-democracy demonstrations originally held in 1990. In 2025, they took on renewed significance amid nationwide demonstrations against police brutality, corruption, and economic hardship.

Death

On 7 July 2025, during the protests, security forces opened fire in Ndumberi, a residential area in Kiambu County. Laban Mwangi Kagunda was reportedly shot in the head by a stray bullet. Witnesses state that Kagunda was not actively participating in the protest but was caught in the crossfire.

Aftermath

Kagunda's death was among six civilians killed in Kiambu County during the Saba Saba Day protests, including other victims such as Bridgit Njoki Wainaina, a 12-year-old girl, Dennis Mutuma Mwangi, and Laban Kamau. The families of the deceased condemned the use of live ammunition by police in residential areas and called for independent investigations and justice.

Funeral

Laban Mwangi Kagunda was laid to rest in his community amidst mourning and calls for accountability from human rights groups and local leaders.
