Ian Mungai was pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree at the Mount Kenya University School of Law. Known for his quiet demeanor and academic excellence, he was passionate about justice, constitutional rights, and youth advocacy. He also had a strong interest in photography, often using it to document events and social issues.
Death
On July 7, 2025, Mungai was present during the Saba Saba Day protests in Nairobi, which commemorate pro-democracy demonstrations first held in 1990. While photographing the protest, he was reportedly struck in the head by a stray bullet. Witnesses claimed the bullet was fired by police officers attempting to disperse crowds with live ammunition. Mungai was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Mount Kenya University issued a statement mourning his death and called for a full investigation.
Context
Mungai's death occurred during a wave of protests that erupted in June 2025 following the death of teacher and blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang in police custody.
