Brian Mike Kasaine (c. 2005 – 25 June 2024) was a 19-year-old Kenyan student who was killed by police during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Narok Town, Kenya. His death became a symbol of state violence and police brutality during the 2024–2025 Kenyan protests.

Background

Kasaine had recently completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), scoring a B+, and had been admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University to pursue further studies.

On 25 June 2024, he joined a peaceful protest in Narok Town, one of several nationwide demonstrations against the proposed Finance Bill, which had sparked widespread outrage among youth and civil society.

Killing

Kasaine was shot by police officers during the protest near the gate of the Narok Police Station. Eyewitnesses reported that he was unarmed and participating peacefully when officers opened fire using live ammunition. He later succumbed to his injuries at the Narok County Referral Hospital.

Public Response

His death led to widespread mourning in Narok County. Residents marched through the streets with his coffin, demanding accountability and justice for victims of police violence.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Kenya and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), condemned the killing and called for independent investigations. His case was highlighted in broader calls to end the use of lethal force on peaceful protesters.
