Wilson Wekesa Sitati was a 22-year-old electrical engineering student at Olympic Technical Institute in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya. He tragically lost his life on June 25, 2024, during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi.
Background
Wilson was the third-born in his family and had a passion for football. On the day of his death, he had gone to Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) to collect a food parcel sent from his rural home in Bungoma County. He never returned home, and his family became concerned when they couldn't reach him. His body was later found at the City Mortuary, identified by the clothes he had been wearing when he left home. An autopsy revealed that he died from blunt force trauma to the chest and neck.[1]
Circumstances of Death
Wilson's death occurred during a day of violent clashes between protesters and anti-riot police. The protests were part of a larger movement against the government's proposed tax hikes under the Finance Bill 2024. Security forces responded with water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition to disperse protesters. Wilson was among the casualties of these confrontations.[2]
Aftermath and Burial
Wilson was laid to rest in his hometown of Kimilili, Bungoma County, on July 6, 2024. The funeral saw a large turnout, with mourners demanding justice for his death. DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa condemned the use of excessive force by police against unarmed protesters and praised the youth for their role in challenging the government's taxation policies.[3]
