Charles Owino – Protest Victim (2024)

Full Name: Charles Owino Age: 19 Date of Death: 25 June 2024 Location: Kitengela, Nairobi County Cause of Death: Gunshot wound to the head Initial Classification: Road accident (as per morgue records) Autopsy Findings: Confirmed gunshot wound to the head Family Response: Family identified the body and filed a complaint with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Human Rights Groups Involved: Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), Amnesty International Related Cases: Shaquille Obienge, Kepher Odiwuor Ouma

Charles Owino was among the victims of the violent crackdown during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi on 25 June 2024. He was shot in the head during protests in Kitengela. Initially, his death was misclassified as a road accident in official records. However, an autopsy confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound to the head. His family identified his body and subsequently filed a complaint with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), seeking justice.

This case is part of a broader pattern where police-related deaths during protests were allegedly misclassified to obscure the use of excessive force.
