Daniel "Dan" Kakai was a **17‑year‑old Form Two student** at St Veronica Siritanyi High School in Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County. He was shot by police during anti‑Finance Bill protests in Bungoma town.

Incident & Death

On **25 June 2024**, Dan told his family he was going to shave his hair before resuming school. He was later shot in the back by anti‑riot police while walking to a barber shop along Bungoma town's main street. A Good Samaritan rescued him and rushed him to Bungoma County Referral Hospital, where doctors confirmed a shattered femur; he underwent surgery but later succumbed to his injuries. [1]

Burial & Public Reaction

Dan was laid to rest on **6 July 2024** in his home area of Bumula Constituency alongside **Willy Sitati**, another protest-related victim from Kimilili. Local leaders—including Bumula MP Jack Wamboka and MP Zacharia Barasa—condemned his killing and called for investigations into police conduct. [2]

Legacy & Call for Justice

Dan’s sister, Josephine Kakai, appealed to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other agencies to ensure justice is served. The family and community described him as a polite and hardworking student whose tragic death highlighted excessive force during peaceful protests. [3]
