Deaths of Infants Exposed to Tear Gas in Kibera, March 2023
- During protests in Kibera, Nairobi (March 30, 2023), tear gas canisters were fired into residential areas, including houses where children were present.
- Two infants—**Brighton** (7 months old) and **Precious** (4 months old)—both reportedly died in the days following exposure after tear gas entered their homes.
- According to eyewitness and medical reports, both infants developed respiratory distress; hospital referrals and interventions were delayed or ineffective. The mother of Brighton, Jackline Moraa (aged 31), recounted worsening symptoms that led to his death the following week. Similarly, Precious started bleeding and ceased breastfeeding before passing away at dawn.
- These incidents amount to grave violations of child protection and the right to life under international law—particularly given the proximity of tear gas deployment to non-consenting, unavoidable victims.
