Background
On 7 July 2025, youths in Kangari gathered to protest perceived police inaction regarding a suspected boda boda thief. The protests were part of nationwide demonstrations addressing police brutality, corruption, and socioeconomic hardship.
Death
Julius was among a group of youths peacefully protesting in Kangari Market when police officers opened fire. According to his brother, Benjamin Kioko, Julius sustained gunshot wounds to the lower abdomen and upper arm and was declared dead on arrival at Murang’a County Referral Hospital.
Aftermath
His death triggered deep grief among his family and community. Benjamin Kioko publicly called for justice, stating: “I have lost a brother … we want justice for him.” Other protesters were also injured, and civil society groups demanded accountability and investigations into the use of live ammunition by security forces.
