Elvis Musavi (died 7 July 2025) was a Kenyan civilian who was fatally shot by police during the 2025 Saba Saba protests in Kangemi, Nairobi County. He was reportedly returning home from work and was not participating in the protests when he was killed.
Background
The Saba Saba protests of 2025 were organized primarily by Gen Z youth across Kenya in response to economic conditions, corruption, and widespread police brutality. The demonstrations were meant to mark the historical pro-democracy Saba Saba Day, but many turned violent after security forces responded with force.
Death
According to witnesses and his family, Musavi was heading home from work in Kangemi on the evening of 7 July 2025 when he was shot in the back by police. He later succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a widow and a six-month-old child.
Aftermath
Elvis Musaviβs death sparked outrage from human rights organizations, who cited his killing as an example of the disproportionate and unlawful force used by police during the protests. His name was among dozens listed in casualty reports compiled by civil society groups.
Legacy
His death, alongside other protest-related killings, fueled calls for police reform, accountability, and independent investigations into the conduct of security forces during peaceful protests.
