He was reportedly at his home when he was shot in the chest and abdomen by police officers. His death, along with others during the protests, sparked national outrage and calls for justice.

Background

The Saba Saba Day protests on 7 July 2025 commemorated the 35th anniversary of the 1990 pro-democracy movement. The demonstrations were primarily led by Gen Z youth across Kenya, demanding reforms and accountability from the government. The protests were met with a heavy police presence, and in some areas, authorities used live ammunition to disperse crowds.

Death

According to reports, Paul Makori was at his home in Kangemi when police officers fired at him. He was struck in the chest and abdomen and died from his injuries. His family has called for justice, stating that he was not involved in the protests and was merely at home when he was shot.

Aftermath

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the deaths of 41 individuals, including Paul Makori, who were allegedly killed by police during the protests. The IPOA has faced challenges in accessing witnesses, as many fear for their safety. Families of the victims, including Makori's, have demanded accountability and an end to police brutality.

Legacy

Paul Makori's death has become a symbol of the excessive use of force by security forces during the Saba Saba Day protests. His family and human rights organizations continue to advocate for justice and reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
