Earnest Kanyi was a Kenyan protester who was shot and killed by police on June 25, 2024, during nationwide demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024. He was among the Generation Z-led protestors who stormed Parliament in Nairobi in a dramatic show of resistance to proposed tax measures. His name was officially listed among the nine confirmed civilian fatalities by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

Background

The 2024 Kenyan Finance Bill protests were driven largely by Kenyan youth, organized organically online and mobilized through social media. On June 25, 2024, protestors in Nairobi broke through police lines and entered Parliament. Police opened fire with live bullets.

Kanyi was reportedly near the Parliament complex when he was fatally shot. IPOA listed him among six people who died from gunshot wounds that day. His death, like those of several other protestors, became symbolic of the growing calls for police accountability and justice.
