William Musyimi Mutevu (died 25 June 2025) was a 21‑year‑old Kenyan protester from Matuu, Machakos County. He was killed during commemorative Gen Z protests marking the anniversary of the 2024 Finance Bill demonstrations.
Background
These Gen Z-led demonstrations began on 25 June 2025, one year after widespread protests against the Kenya Finance Bill. Protesters across at least 27 counties—including Machakos, Makueni, Kiambu, Nakuru, and Nairobi—gathered to demand governance reforms and justice for those previously killed by the police.
Death
During protests in Matuu, demonstrators attempted to storm the police station. Authorities responded with tear gas and live ammunition. William was shot five times in the abdomen and later died at Matuu Mission Hospital ([turn1search0]).
Aftermath
His family called for justice and compensation. Witnesses and civil society groups condemned the violence, highlighting what they saw as unnecessary escalation by police. According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and multiple media reports, at least one person died in Matuu and eight others were injured on that day.
